What makes Pericnik Waterfall so special?

Although at first glance, few tourists might consider visiting this waterfall while traveling to Slovenia, you can actually have a very unique experience when you visit Peričnik Falls. Peričnik Falls is one of the rare waterfalls that you can walk behind, allowing you to get a perfect view of the waterfall from every angle.

Walking behind a waterfall is a special experience. This is possible at only a few waterfalls in the world. Another example of this is Seljalandsfoss in Iceland.

Where is the Pericnik Waterfall located in Slovenia?

The Peričnik Waterfall is located in the northwestern part of Slovenia, within the Julian Alps in the Triglav National Park. The valley through which the waterfall is approached is called the Vrata Valley. The nearest village is Mojstrana, and the closest larger town is Kranjska Gora.

Hiking trails to the Pericnik Waterfall

The hike to Peričnik Waterfall is quite easy, all you need is a good pair of hiking shoes. Although the trail is a bit steep and slippery in some places, it’s relatively short, allowing you to reach the waterfall from the car park in a short time.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the viewpoints shown in the photo below, they are worth checking out during your hike.

Routes to the lower waterfall

As shown on the photo, there are two paths leading to the falls from the car park: one on the right side of the falls and the other on the left. Both paths are steep, with the one on the right (when facing the falls) being a bit more slippery and less developed, while the left one is more developed and has more steps.

It’s worthwhile taking a circular tour to see everything along the way.

On the hiking trail, you can walk along the cliff side behind the waterfall, which is not to be missed, it’s a great experience!

As there is often a large spray of water near the falls, be prepared with waterproof clothing, perhaps a raincoat.

Route to the upper waterfall

There’s only one path leading to the upper waterfall. From the left-side path of the waterfall, you can turn right onto an upward trail that leads to the upper waterfall (marked as point 3 on the sign). Although the upper waterfall is only 16 meters high, since the hike isn’t difficult, it’s recommended to visit.

Is there an entrance fee to visit the waterfall?

There is no entrance fee to the waterfall. However, you have to pay for parking during certain periods, which you can do on site.

If you visit the waterfall outside the peak season, the Koča pri Peričniku hut, where the parking fee is usually collected, is generally closed. Therefore, you don’t have to pay for parking during that time.

Where to rest and eat near the waterfall?

In the Koča pri Peričniku hut next to the car park, you can sit down and enjoy a local sweet, soft drink or beer.
