Most places ask for your car keys, which we don’t recommend giving. Parking fees can be between 50-100 euros per day during peak season. Outside of peak season, the situation is better.

If you don’t want to drive or rent a car, in Santorini you can rely on private transfers. On the Amalfi Coast, there are private transfers, buses, and ferries available, making public transportation easier on the Amalfi Coast.

Santorini

Santorini has several great places to visit, mostly close to each other. The most famous areas are Oia in the north and Fira to the southeast. You should also visit Imerovigli for its beautiful views, and if you have more time, check out Kamari, Perissa, and Akrotiri.

Most beaches are on the eastern side of the island, although Santorini is not so popular for its beach activities.

Some of the most stunning spots include the area around the castle in Oia and the seaside promenade called Agiou Mina in Fira.

Amalfi Coast

Winter months are generally less recommended, but we enjoyed a visit in January with 17°C, blooming flowers, and very few people on the streets. However, winter is not always this warm, and many places, especially hotels and restaurants, may be closed.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit, as there are fewer crowds. The best months to travel to either destination are May and September, but early June and early October are also good options.

In summer, especially in July and August, we don’t recommend visiting due to the large number of tourists, unless you have no other choice.

Costs

Santorini and the Amalfi Coast are more expensive compared to other European destinations, especially when it comes to hotels and restaurants. Good accommodations usually cost several hundred euros per night. For a cheaper trip, travel outside the peak season and be prepared to make significant compromises.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, accommodation options on the Amalfi Coast can be quite poor, especially in terms of quality. Santorini offers better quality, but it’s still not cheap. If you’re looking for high-quality accommodations, you might have to pay hundreds of euros per night, and find places with good views can be very pricey, often over 500 or even 1000 euros per night.

To save money, you could take day trips to the Amalfi Coast from Naples or nearby areas, where you can find more affordable and better-quality accommodations. Unfortunately, there are no similar options for Santorini, though major cruise lines offer day stops in Santorini, so you wouldn’t need to pay for Santorini accommodation.

Both destinations have luxury hotel options, but Santorini might offer more choices.

Dining options are similar, with average meals costing about 20–40 euros per person.

When choosing luxury restaurants or bars, always check the minimum spend requirements in advance. At some places, the minimum spend can be as high as 100 euros per person.

Parking is another issue. In Santorini, most places offer free parking, either at the hotel or in small towns. On the Amalfi Coast, parking is very expensive and limited. Valet parking is common, but we don’t recommend it due to stories of damaged cars or missing items.

Food

There are big differences between the food in these two areas. Since we are more fans of Italian food, we prefer Italian restaurants, but you’ll still find plenty of good food in Santorini.
