- By car: Amsterdam allows newer cars into the city (meeting the required emission standards), and parking is not impossible in the downtown area. Therefore, it is worth considering driving into the city and then exploring the downtown area on foot.
- By public transport: The city has an extensive metro, tram, and bus network, so this is also an option. However, you can reach most of the best spots in the downtown area only on foot.
The best things to see and do in Amsterdam include:
- Amsterdam’s canals: Discover the city’s iconic canals on a boat cruise, providing relaxation and splendid views of buildings and landmarks.
- Walking tour: Take a leisurely stroll through the historic downtown area, visiting Dam Square, the Royal Palace Amsterdam, and interesting churches like The New Church. Don’t forget to stop and admire the decorated bicycles placed along the streets.

Here are some attractions worth exploring in Giethoorn:
- Canal Boat Cruise: Giethoorn is also famous for its canals, often referred to as the “Venice of the North.” Rent a boat and enjoy a peaceful ride along the narrow waterways, admiring the picturesque cottages lining the shores.

Generally, in the morning, we planned a visit to Zaanse Schans, located north of Amsterdam, which can be visited year-round.

Once you’re done exploring Zaanse Schans, it’s time for lunch, followed by exploring the rest of the Dutch countryside.
For the afternoon, there are two options:
- If you’re visiting during other times of the year, visit the magnificent Castle De Haar, one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands with its huge gardens.
- If you’re traveling in spring, head to the famous Dutch tulip fields and Keukenhof garden.
Castle De Haar
Castle De Haar is a lovely medieval castle near Utrecht, famous for its stunning architecture and huge gardens.
To enter the castle and its gardens, you’ll need tickets. You can buy combined tickets for both or separate ones just for the gardens.
Inside the castle, you can wander through luxurious rooms filled with beautiful furniture, tapestries, and artwork, while discovering the castle’s captivating history.
The well-kept gardens surrounding the castle boast intricate flowerbeds, serene ponds, and lush greenery, creating a picturesque setting.
Castle De Haar isn’t just one of the Netherlands’ most captivating castles, it’s also a fantastic spot for photography.
Keukenhof and other tulip fields
Spring in the Netherlands brings beautiful tulip fields, and Keukenhof is the top spot to see them.
