Meteora

Meteora is one of the most incredible places in Greece, famous for its enormous rock formations topped with centuries-old monasteries.

Located in central Greece, about 3–4 hours from Athens, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers breathtaking views, scenic roads, hiking trails, and historic monasteries you can actually visit.

I’ve been to Meteora myself, and I can honestly say it’s even more impressive in real life than in photos! Whether you’re planning a day trip or staying a few nights, it’s a place you shouldn’t miss on your Greece itinerary.

In this mini guide, I’ll share where to stay, what to see, the best tours, and my personal travel tips.

My Personal Meteora Tips

01

Explore Meteora by car

If you want more flexibility, I recommend renting a car. It’s the easiest way to visit the monasteries and stop at the best viewpoints whenever you like.

02

Stay at least one night

Meteora looks incredible during the day, but the sunset views are something special! Stay overnight if you can, so you can enjoy both.

03

Wear comfortable shoes

Visiting the monasteries often involves climbing plenty of steps, so comfortable walking shoes are a must!

04

Explore beyond Meteora

If you have extra time, consider visiting other beautiful places in the region, such as Vikos Gorge, one of Greece’s most impressive natural attractions.
