Horseshoe Bend is southwest of Page, Arizona, right near the city limits and close to Highway 89.

You can reach Horseshoe Bend by car from Highway 89, heading south from Page.
Parking near Horseshoe Bend
You’ll easily spot the only parking lot for the viewpoint from the road, labeled as Horseshoe Bend Overlook Parking Lot on Google Maps.
There is a one-time parking fee (or entrance fee) of $10 per car (as of 2025). For updated prices and details, check the official website.
Walking to the viewpoint
After parking, a short 15-minute walk will take you to the overlook.
The trail is dusty but well-marked and quite popular, so it’s easy to follow. Along the way, you can enjoy beautiful landscapes, rock formations, and local wildlife.
The total walking distance is about 0.6 miles (900 meters) to reach Horseshoe Bend.
Best time to visit Horseshoe Bend
Let’s see what the best times to visit Horseshoe Bend could be. I’ll show you the weather expected in different seasons and months, as well as the best times of the day.
Best months to visit Horseshoe Bend
Winter months
The winter months in Page are mainly November, December, January, and February. During this time, daytime temperatures are typically between 5°C and 18°C (41°F and 64°F), and it often freezes at night.
There are two advantages to winter: fewer crowds and lower prices. However, due to the cold weather, outdoor hiking can be less pleasant, making these months not ideal for visiting Horseshoe Bend.
Spring months
The spring months of March, April, and May offer much nicer weather. Daytime temperatures average between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), which is ideal for outdoor activities. There’s also more daylight, which can be a plus.
Of the spring months, May stands out as a great option, with warm but not too hot weather yet. The only downside is a higher chance of rain, so it’s good to check the forecast. Also, prices are usually at their highest during this time.
Summer months
The summer months of June, July, August, and sometimes September are the hottest. During these months, daytime temperatures typically range from 28°C to 36°C (82°F to 97°F). The dry heat makes it less comfortable for outdoor activities, and I don’t recommend visiting during this time. Summer also brings larger crowds and relatively high prices. It might be cheaper than spring, but the heat makes it less ideal.
Fall months
Fall lasts from late September to early November. The weather is pleasant, with daytime temperatures between 18°C and 30°C (64°F to 86°F), similar to spring, with some occasional rain. However, prices are still above average. But if you travel during good weather, you can have a really nice experience.
Speaking of fall, October stands out as an excellent choice, with fewer crowds, pleasant daytime temperatures, and moderate prices.

Best time of day to visit Horseshoe Bend
There can certainly be some debate about the best time of day to visit Horseshoe Bend, but I’ll share my personal experience, as I’ve been there at different times throughout the day.
Sunrise
The advantage of visiting at sunrise is that you’ll encounter minimal crowds, meaning no tourist crowds to deal with. The sun rises from the east, initially casting shadows over the landscape, so I think the morning hours after sunrise are better, when the light has fully spread over the scene.
Morning, early midday
I recommend visiting in the morning or early midday, once the sun is up and fully illuminating the river. If you’re into photography, you can capture some fantastic lighting during this time. If you arrive early enough, you won’t have to deal with large crowds.
Late morning to early afternoon
At this time, the sun is at its highest point, offering great lighting for photographers. However, you’ll likely encounter huge crowds, as this is when most people visit. If possible, avoid the hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.
Late afternoon, sunset
At sunset, the sun shines from the west, facing directly into the viewpoint. While it’s pleasant to view the river with the naked eye, the lighting for photography is not ideal. The sun is in your face, making it harder to capture great shots. Additionally, there are usually many tourists at this time as well. However, if you don’t mind the crowds and aren’t after the perfect photos, watching the sunset at Horseshoe Bend can still be a beautiful experience.
After sunset
The period right after sunset, when the sun has dipped below the horizon but it’s still light outside, can be an excellent time for photos. Some of my best shots were taken during this time. The crowds are still there, but if you want to experience the sunset at Horseshoe Bend, take your photos after the sun has set.
Evening
Visiting after dark is not recommended, as the area is officially closed after sunset.

- Sunrise: Quiet, minimal crowds, good light after the sun rises.
- Morning/early midday: Best for photography with good light, fewer crowds if early.
- Late morning to early afternoon: Best light but most crowded.
- Late afternoon/sunset: Good for views, but not great for photos due to sunlight direction; crowded.
- After sunset: Great for photos, but still some crowds; sunset experience possible.
- Evening: Not recommended; area is closed.
Sunrise or sunset?
At sunrise, the sun rises behind the landmark, so the river stays in the shadow for a while. However, as the sun rises, it gradually lights up the place. That’s why I recommend the 1-2 hours after sunrise for photography, rather than the exact moment of sunrise. This also ensures a more peaceful visit since there are fewer tourists early in the morning.
Sunset is much more popular at Horseshoe Bend, and it’s a beautiful sight to see the sun set behind the bend. However, for photography, the lighting is a bit more challenging, as the sun shines directly in your face for a long time, causing glare in the photos. Also, as I mentioned, there are more tourists around at sunset.
Overall, I recommend sunrise and the morning hours if you’re specifically looking to take photos. If you’re just looking for a nice evening activity as a tourist, then go for sunset.
Most of our photos of Horseshoe Bend were taken in October, at different times of the day, but I liked the morning light the best.

- Wide-angle camera: The area is much bigger than it looks in photos, and most great shots are taken with a wide-angle lens. Be sure to bring one for the best pictures!
- Snacks and water: While getting there isn’t difficult, it’s always a good idea to have some food and water with you.
- Comfortable shoes: Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes for safety. The viewpoints are on steep cliffs, often without railings, so proper footwear is essential. Though sandstone isn’t very slippery, safety always comes first.
Where to stay near Horseshoe Bend
Since Horseshoe Bend is just outside Page, the best place to stay is in town.
