Battery Spencer: Our favorite spot
Battery Spencer was our absolute favorite viewpoint during our visit to San Francisco.
This spot is located in the Marin Headlands, near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
You can reach it via Conzelman Road, where you’ll find roadside parking spots. However, during busy times, parking and access can be challenging since it’s a very popular place.
From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the viewpoint along a marked but dusty trail called Battery Spencer Trail. At the end of the trail, you’ll find the viewpoint, a simple half-gravel, half-concrete area.
This spot offers amazing views, especially at sunrise and sunset. Our photos were taken at sunset in early November.
If you visit at sunset, consider staying until it gets completely dark, as the bridge also looks stunning when lit up at night.
Since the viewpoint is close to the bridge, a wide-angle camera can be helpful for capturing the entire scene.
Hawk Hill
Hawk Hill is another must-visit viewpoint in the Marin Headlands, offering stunning panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the city skyline.
It’s easy to reach by car via Conzelman Road, not far from Battery Spencer. There’s a parking area nearby, but like other popular spots in the Marin Headlands, parking can be limited during busy times.
From Hawk Hill, you can enjoy a higher viewpoint than at Battery Spencer, giving you a wider perspective of the area. On clear days, you can see Alcatraz Island, the Bay Bridge, and even the Pacific Ocean on the horizon.

It has a medium-sized parking area with a small rest stop, offering a good, close-up view of the Golden Gate Bridge. However, the parking lot is almost always full, making it hard to find a spot.
From Vista Point, you also get amazing views of San Francisco’s skyline, which is one of the main reasons we recommend visiting this spot.

Battery Yates

The best viewpoints on the southern side of the Golden Gate Bridge are near the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center.
Here, you’ll find several great spots for capturing amazing photos, marked on Google Maps as:

These locations are all excellent choices for photography.
You can reach the area via Highway 101, and the nearest parking is at the GGB Parking Zone, located right next to the Welcome Center. However, parking can be an issue, especially during busy times. If you can’t find a spot, try the nearby Battery East Carpark.
For the best experience, visit during the morning or early afternoon when the crowds are smaller, and the lighting is ideal for photos.
Fort Point
